Chace Crawford plays wealthy teenager Nate Archibald in Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford has signed up to to star in the remake of the 1984 classic film Footloose, replacing teen heartthrob Zac Efron.

It is thought the 23-year-old star will play Ren McCormack, the lead role first made famous by Kevin Bacon, according to film trade newspaper Variety.

Efron apparently pulled out because he felt the film was too similar to the High School Musical series.

Filming for the recast movie is expected to start in March 2010.

Crawford, who plays wealthy New York teenager Nate Archibald in Gossip Girl, is expected to continue his role in the teen soap's forthcoming third season.

He is currently starring in Joel Schumacher's drama Twelve.
