6 Music radio show for Matthews

Cerys Matthews performs with Catatonia
Catatonia's hits included Mulder and Scully and Road Rage

Pop singer Cerys Matthews is to present BBC 6 Music's daily lunchtime show, the digital radio station has said.

The former Catatonia frontwoman, 40, takes over from Nemone Metaxas, who is on maternity leave from next month.

Matthews has already deputised on the station and currently presents weekend show A Month Of Sundays.

She joins other musicians - including Elbow's Guy Garvey and Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson - in presenting shows on 6 Music.

"It's been 20 years since I first started in music and these last few months hosting shows for 6 Music have been as exciting as ever," Matthews said.

"Seeing the responses streaming back in via text and email from the listeners is simply addictive and to have this experience on a daily basis will be an absolute pleasure."

Radio 2 and 6 Music controller Bob Shennan said the singer's "amazing passion for music delivered in a charmingly engaging way" was "a welcome addition" to the station.
