Actress Dawn French has signed up to star in a new comedy series for BBC Two, entitled Roger and Val Have Just Got In.

The series will focus on the lives of a middle-aged couple when they arrive home after the working day.

Mark Freeland, head of comedy at the BBC, said: "It's original, intriguing, sweet, funny and full of pathos."

The lead male character has yet to be cast for the six-part series, which is due to be broadcast later this year.

"Roger And Val leapt off the page at me the very first time I saw it," said Mr Freeland.

"There will be nothing like it when it arrives on BBC Two."

Vicar Of Dibley star French was honoured with a Bafta Fellowship last month, alongside her comedy partner Jennifer Saunders.
