Beyonce drama stalks way to top

Stalking thriller Obsessed, starring Beyonce Knowles and Idris Elba, has topped the North American box office, according to early weekend figures.

The film, which tells the story of a couple whose marriage is threatened by the husband's psychotic temp, took $28.5m (£19.6m) on its opening weekend.

Zac Efron's film 17 Again fell a place to number two, taking $11.7m (£8.1m).

Action movie Fighting opened at number three while The Soloist, starring Jamie Foxx, debuted at number four.

Disney nature documentary Earth, which follows families of humpback whales, elephants and polar bears over the course of a year, opened at number five.

Obsessed, starring singer Knowles and The Wire actor Elba, was the top film despite many US reviewers dismissing it is as a poor rehash of 1987's Fatal Attraction.

Box office takings for the weekend were about $112m (£76.9m) - up 23.5% on the same weekend last year, according to box office tracker Media By Numbers.

Takings for the year so far were $3.1bn (£2.1bn) - up 17.4% on the same time last year, it said.
