Sir Paul McCartney is nominated for two Grammy Awards

Sir Paul McCartney is to headline the opening day of California's Coachella music festival in April, organisers have announced.

The former Beatle will lead a bill which also includes Franz Ferdinand and ex-Smiths frontman Morrissey.

Other acts confirmed for the three-day event include US rockers The Killers and singer Amy Winehouse.

The annual festival, which began in 1999, will also feature Leonard Cohen. It will take place from 17-19 April.

Sir Paul, who is due to perform at the Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles next month, said he was "really excited" at the prospect of playing the event.

"I have heard that Coachella is one of the greatest festivals in the world," he added.

In September, the musician performed in Israel for the first time in his career.
