Hudson to perform at Super Bowl

Jennifer Hudson
Hudson is up for four Grammys on 8 February

Jennifer Hudson is to sing at next month's US Super Bowl - her first public performance since her mother, brother and nephew were shot dead.

The former American Idol contestant and Oscar winner will perform the American national anthem on 1 February at the event in Tampa Bay, Florida.

In October 2008, the three members of her family were shot dead in her home city of Chicago.

Her estranged brother-in-law William Balfour has been charged with murder.

Rock veteran Bruce Springsteen will play the coveted half-time slot at the Super Bowl during the game - usually the most watched US television broadcast of the year.

Hudson, 27, who has been nominated for four Grammy awards including best R&B album, competed in American Idol in 2004 but was eliminated midway through the contest.

She picked up the best supporting actress Oscar in 2007 for her performance in Dreamgirls, starring alongside Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy.
