A film about a poor Indian boy who wins a fortune on a game show has taken three prizes, including best film, at the British Independent Film Awards.

Slumdog Millionaire, which is out in Britain in January, also won best director for Danny Boyle and best newcomer for 18-year-old Dev Patel.

Speaking before the ceremony, Patel said he hoped the film would be well-received on his ''home turf'' of the UK.
