Veteran newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald has made his last appearance as co-presenter of ITV's News at Ten.

The 69-year-old said it had been "an enormous pleasure" to present the show. Co-host Julie Etchingham said working with him had been a "real privilege".

Sir Trevor presented News at Ten from 1992 to 1999 when it was taken off air. He returned when it was revived in January this year.

He was awarded the OBE in 1992 and a Knighthood in 1999.

He will continue working on ITN's Tonight programme, and presenting high profile documentary projects.

'And finally'

Sir Trevor announced his intention to step down last month.

He said he had "tremendously enjoyed the opportunity to help re-establish News at Ten", but wanted to "leave on a high" after anchoring the US election coverage.

During his career, the presenter became known for quipping "and finally" before reporting a light-hearted story at the end of each bulletin.

On Thursday, he stuck to tradition and delivered his final "and finally" about two old soldiers reuniting after many years.

After Etchingham paid tribute to him, he thanked her and said: "For me, it's been an enormous pleasure."

Born in Trinidad, Sir Trevor became ITN's first black reporter in 1973, and has interviewed world leaders including US President Bill Clinton and South African President Nelson Mandela.

He will be replaced by Mark Austin as the regular co-presenter of the programme.
