Xtra Factor host Holly Willoughby has confirmed she is expecting her first child after Simon Cowell unexpectedly let the news slip on air.

Willoughby, 27, was taken by surprise on Saturday's ITV2 spin-off show when Cowell said: "Congratulations to you."

His fellow X Factor judge Louis Walsh added: "On the pregnancy," leaving Willoughby with no choice but to reveal the news to the audience.

"Yes, I am pregnant - I don't know if people know that yet," she said.

"I'm feeling emotional tonight, let's move on."

But later on the programme, which follows ITV1's X Factor and the later X Factor result show, she talked again about her impending motherhood while interviewing singer Will Young.

Young, who had performed on the X Factor, asked Willoughby if she would like a drink.

"I can't have a beer, I'm pregnant," she replied.

Willoughby has been married to TV producer Dan Baldwin for just over a year.

She is also the presenter of ITV1's hit celebrity talent show Dancing on Ice, which returns in January.

Her other TV credits include Streetmate, and Holly and Fearne Go Dating.

Singer Austin Drage, 21, was voted off this week's X Factor.
