Metallica's new album Death Magnetic topped the UK and US album charts

Rock band Metallica have announced they will tour the UK next year for the first time in 12 years.

The eight dates, including gigs in Nottingham, Manchester, Sheffield, London and Glasgow, are part of their European indoor arena tour.

This will be the group's first full-scale tour for British audiences since 1996, having concentrated on festivals and one-off shows since then.

Tickets for the February concerts go on sale on Friday.

Last month the band's new album Death Magnetic, their first studio record since 2003, topped the US and UK album charts.

They also headlined the Reading and Leeds festivals in August.
