Actor David Duchovny has separated from his wife of 11 years, actress Tea Leoni, it has been reported.

People magazine published a statement on behalf of the pair confirming the split, saying they had "in fact been separated for several months".

Duchovny, who plays a womanising writer on the TV show Californication, recently left rehab after completing a course for sex addiction.

The couple have a 9-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son together.

"In light of continuous speculation over the lives and marriage of Tea Leoni and David Duchovny, the couple has confirmed that they have in fact been separated for several months," the statement said.

"The couple had hoped to keep this separation private for the sake of their children."

Duchovny rose to fame playing FBI agent Fox Mulder in The X Files, which first arrived on TV screens in 1993.

His portrayal of the troubled Los Angeles novelist Hank Moody in Californication won him a Golden Globe in January.

Leoni is currently starring in the big screen comedy Ghost Town, with The Office star Ricky Gervais.
