A photographer who informed police of Heather Locklear allegedly driving erratically in California made money from taking pictures of her arrest.

Jill Ishkanian's solicitor said it was her "civic duty" to report the actress.

Nicholas Tepper added Ms Ishkanian was not "disqualified from reporting the story" because she called police.

The former Dynasty and Melrose Place star was held on Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription medication.

Impending arrest

Ms Ishkanian sold the photos to US gossip website TMZ for $27,000 (£15,309) through a third party.

However, TMZ - which is part of media group Time Warner - has since questioned whether Ms Ishkanian was "up to no good" on recent postings.

It also claimed the photographer had alerted fellow paparazzi to Ms Locklear's impending arrest.

California Highway Patrol, which would not confirm the identity of the caller, said she did not identify the driver as Ms Locklear, but said the actress appeared "drunk" in a market.

Prosecutors will now decide, once results are returned, whether to pursue charges against the actress over claims she was under the influence of other substances.

Mr Tepper also said Ms Ishkanian had provided authorities with a statement and would give evidence against the actress if necessary.
