The movie is proving a popular addition to DVD collections

The movie version of Sex and the City has scored the fastest-selling DVD of 2008 in the UK, shifting more than 920,000 copies in its opening week.

It has easily beaten animated film Ratatouille, which sold 700,000 in its first week earlier this year.

The Official Charts Company says Sex and the City will easily surpass the one million mark in the coming week.

Titanic shifted 2.3m copies on DVD and video in 1998 and remains the fastest opening week seller of all time.

The OCC's records for DVD and video sales date back to 1994.

Elsewhere in the week's DVD sales chart, a set of Sex and the City's six television seasons came back in at number 30.

The film version of the popular New York-based show was released in cinemas earlier this year and spent two weeks at number one in the UK.

In its opening weekend in the US, the film made $56.8m (31.8m).
