Tributes are being paid to Hollywood legend Paul Newman, who has died, aged 83.
There is a point where feelings go beyond words. I have lost a real friend. My life - and this country - is better for his being in it.
He was an extraordinary man in every respect. I think everybody knows about his incredible work for charity and the way in which he transitioned so gracefully from being an iconic movie star to being a sort of humanitarian and a worker for charity.
For me personally, working with him was the highlight of my professional life.
The thing I remember the most about him is his total lack of ego and his lack of entourage and his lack of hangers-on. He was just...he demanded to be seen as a working actor and not a movie star.
Paul Newman played many unforgettable roles. But the ones for which he was proudest never had top billing on the marquee. Devoted husband. Loving father. Adoring grandfather. Dedicated philanthropist.
Our father was a rare symbol of selfless humility, the last to acknowledge what he was doing was special.
Intensely private, he quietly succeeded beyond measure in impacting the lives of so many with his generosity.
FORMER US PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON AND SENATOR HILARY CLINTON
Paul was an American icon, philanthropist and champion for children. We will miss our dear friend, whose continued support always meant the world to us. Our prayers and thoughts are with Joanne and the Newman family and the many people who Paul impacted through his endless kindness and generosity.
Paul Newman was a great humble giant. He said it was all down to luck, but the rest of us know it was his talent, wit and generous heart that made him the star he was.
He used his success to help others and did it without wanting a lot of credit. He should be an example to everyone in the acting profession because he seemed to have had his ego surgically removed.
A man who was easy going, who didn't like to be fussed over and truly deserved the admiration and affection he had from millions all over the world.
I knew him only a little; at work, on the race track and in his charity. In all cases the common feature was his easy smile, his unshakeable determination and his unaffected and sincere concern for others.
He was one of nature's gentlemen.
Paul Newman was the ultimate cool guy who men wanted to be like and women adored. He was an American icon, a brilliant actor, a Renaissance man and a generous but modest philanthropist.
He entertained millions in some of Hollywood's most memorable roles ever, and he brightened the lives of many more, especially seriously ill children, through his charitable works.
Arnold Schwarzenegger on Paul Newman's death
He was one of the greatest screen actors of all time and a beautiful man. I think an era just ended.
I was blessed to have known him. The world is better because of him. Sometimes God makes perfect people and Paul Newman was one of them.
ROBERT FORRESTER, VICE CHAIRMAN, NEWMAN'S OWN FOUNDATION
Paul Newman's craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all.
EVA MARIE SAINT
Yes, his eyes were that blue and beautiful.
His legacy as a humanitarian for children around the world is unmatchable. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Joanne and the family.
Paul was a very fine actor and a really good race driver.
But mostly, he personified humanity - always taking care of those who were less fortunate. For me, this will be his legacy.
DAN GLICKMAN, MOTION PICTURE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
The art of film-making and a world in great need of big hearts with bold ambitions is mourning the loss of a legend today.
He will be remembered as an artist, gentleman and humanitarian whose extraordinary career was rivalled in every respect by an exemplary life.
Incredibly, the effect of his charitable work will rival and perhaps even exceed the legacy he leaves us all on the silver screen.
He was a real giant of the cinema. He was the link between the great time of Hollywood, the Cary Grant and people like that, and Tom Cruise. He fills the gap between the two, and fills it in a most extraordinary, dominant manner.
He never played the Hollywood game, he didn't do the social circuit. That didn't appeal to him at all. He took his acting seriously and he was a mighty-fine actor.
He looked like a star, he had a star smile, a star's eyes. But he was a master craftsman at acting. Of course he debuted in the worst film ever made, called "The Silver Chalice", which he doesn't like to talk about or didn't, bless him.
But within seconds he was getting academy award nominations for "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof". I went through life with Paul Newman really. I've just enjoyed everything he's done. He was terrific, terrific.
