Actress Sharon Stone has lost the latest round of an ongoing battle to win custody of her eldest son.

A San Francisco judge denied the Basic Instinct star's request for primary custody of the 8-year-old, who has been living with his father, Phil Bronstein.

The judge ruled that Mr Bronstein's home was more stable and structured, reinforcing a 2007 decision to give the newspaper executive sole custody.

Ms Stone, who has two other adopted sons, retains visiting rights.

The judge said the parents should consult with each other before enrolling their child in any tutoring activities.

He added that Ms Stone's telephone number should be programmed into Roan's mobile and home telephones.

The star's lawyer was unavailable to comment on the ruling, which was made earlier this month.
