Actor Ryan O'Neal and his 23-year-old son, Redmond, have been arrested at their Malibu home on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine, police say.

Officials were conducting a routine check of Redmond, who is serving three years probation after pleading guilty to drug possession charges in June.

Both men were released on bail, set at $10,000 (£5,500) each.

Ryan O'Neal, 67, remains best known for the 1970 film Love Story. Redmond is his son by actress Farrah Fawcett.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore told the Associated Press that, in addition to the drugs that officials suspect belong to Redmond O'Neal, they also found narcotics in actor Ryan O'Neal's living area.

But he added that the substances still needed to be tested.

It is not the first time the O'Neal family have been in the headlines recently.

In February 2007, Ryan O'Neal was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his other son, Griffin, but charges were never filed.

Earlier this year, the actor's daughter, former child star Tatum O'Neal, 44, pleaded guilty in July to disorderly conduct stemming from a drug arrest in June.
