Hellboy defeats Batman in cinemas

Comic book movie Hellboy II: The Golden Army has knocked The Dark Knight off the number one spot in the UK and Ireland box office chart.

The film, which stars Ron Perlman as a red-skinned demon, took 2.97m on its opening weekend.

Abba musical Mamma Mia! remained in second place, with takings of 1.8m, while spy spoof Get Smart made its debut at three, with 1.54m.

Batman dropped to number four, taking 1.45m in its fifth week of release.

Adam Sandler's You Don't Mess with the Zohan was in fifth place followed by The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor.

Teen comedy Wild Child, which stars Julia Roberts' niece Emma Roberts, dropped two places to number seven.

The top ten was rounded out by three animations - Disney-Pixar's Wall-E at eight; Star Wars spin-off The Clone Wars at nine; and primate comedy Space Chimps at 10.
