Dark Knight leads UK box office

Christian Bale plays Batman for the second time

Batman film The Dark Knight has swept to the top of the UK box office with takings of 8.6m.

The epic film, starring Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger, eclipsed Mamma Mia! which took second place with ticket sales of 2.8m.

Teen flick Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging made its debut at number four, with US comedy Baby Mamma new at 10.

The Dark Knight has made more than $300m (151m) in North America after 10 days, breaking a box office record.
