Kaisers wow 50,000 festival fans

The Kaiser Chiefs headlined on Friday night in front of 50.000 fans

The Kaiser Chiefs closed the first day of the Isle of Wight Festival in front of more than 50,000 fans.

The Leeds band were one of the main attractions on Friday which also featured N.E.R.D, KT Tunstall, The Hoosiers and The Wombats.

The Sex Pistols are playing on Saturday with The Police closing the first of this year's major festivals on Sunday.

It is the seventh year since the event, held at Seaclose Park, Newport, was reincarnated in 2002.

Isle of Wight Festival promoter John Giddings said: "It's a coup to get The Police for the festival.

"We're very happy to have the biggest tour of the last two years stopping by the Isle of Wight."

Other acts appearing include Ian Brown, Iggy and the Stooges, The Kooks, The Zutons and Scouting for Girls.

The event won Best Major UK Festival Award at last year's UK Festival Awards.

The promoters aim to recreate the spirit of the famous festivals held on the island at the end of the 1960s, which featured legendary performances by acts such as Jimi Hendrix, the Doors and Bob Dylan.
