Spider-Man actress Kirsten Dunst has revealed she checked into rehab earlier this year to be treated for depression.

The 26-year-old spent time at the Cirque Lodge Treatment Center, in Utah, in February.

"I didn't go to Cirque Lodge for alcohol abuse or drug abuse," Dunst told celebrity website E!Online. "I went there for depression."

Dunst is currently shooting her latest film, All Good Things, with Ryan Gosling in New York.

Celebrity clients

She told E! she decided to go public about her illness after finding herself the subject of speculation in the media.

Cirque Lodge Treatment Center is a well known drug and alcohol addiction treatment centre, and has had a number of celebrity clients.

"There's been a lot of misrepresentation about what is going on in my life, and it's been very painful for my friends and family," added Dunst.

"Depression is pretty serious and should not be gossiped about."
