Barbarella star John Phillip Law has died at the age of 70.

The US actor was best known for playing a blind angel opposite Jane Fonda in the cult science-fiction film.

He made his debut as a seaman in The Russians Are Coming The Russians Are Coming, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Other films he appeared in include The Red Baron, The Hawaiians - with Charlton Heston - and Otto Preminger's 1967 film, Hurry Sundown.

Acting ambitions

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times in 1966, Law said: "I've had more kicks out of playing far-out things.

"It's like putting on a funny face and going out in front of people and going, 'yaaaaaa!'"

Law continued his career in a variety of US and foreign films and TV over the past 30 years, including appearances in The Young and the Restless, and Murder She Wrote.

The son of actress Phyllis Sallee, Law worked as a child actor, but put his acting ambitions aside in his teens.

After taking a college drama class he took the profession up again and started working in the theatre in New York before getting his big break into film.
