R&B star Toni Braxton has been admitted to hospital in Las Vegas after suffering from chest pains.

The 40-year-old singer had to cancel a Las Vegas concert after being taken in for tests.

She has been treated in the past for pericarditis, a viral inflammation of the heart.

Braxton, who is best known for songs including Un-break My Heart and Breathe Again, has been performing at a hotel and casino in the city since 2006.

She was expected to be released after tests, a spokeswoman for Harrah's Entertainment said.

Her show on Tuesday at the Flamingo Showroom was cancelled, but it is not clear if a further show due for Wednesday will also be axed.

"We wish Toni a quick recovery and would her to take the time she needs to regain optimal health," Flamingo president Don Marrandino said.

"We are looking forward to her return at the end of the week."
