Wedding film tops UK box office

Actress Katherine Heigl is the star of 27 Dresses

Romantic comedy 27 Dresses has made its debut at number one in the UK and Ireland box office chart.

The Hollywood film, which charts the progress of a serial bridesmaid, took more than 1.75m in its first week.

The only other new entry in the top 10 was Drillbit Taylor, while Dr Seuss animation Horton Hears A Who! fell from number one to number four.

Step Up 2 The Streets and The Spiderwick Chronicles swapped places at two and three respectively.

27 Dresses stars Katherine Heigl as Jane, a woman who has been a bridesmaid 27 times and must contemplate loyalty to her sister who is with the man she secretly loves.

The movie was released in the US in January and reached number two, being beaten into second place by monster film Cloverfield.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Meet The Spartans, Vantage Point, prehistoric romp 10,000 BC and The Game Plan all slipped down the ratings.

Ghost story The Orphanage, a joint production between Spain and Mexico, held steady at the foot of the chart.
