Pavarotti under fire over taxes

Pavarotti shares the limelight with other opera stars
Opera superstar Luciano Pavarotti has come under renewed pressure from the Italian authorities over his tax affairs.

Prosecutors in Bologna are pressing for the tenor to be tried on charges of tax fraud, according to news agency Ansa.

They allege that Pavarotti, who owns a home in Monte Carlo, has avoided paying 3m worth of taxes in Italy by claiming the principality as his permanent residence.

Their demand comes three months after the 64-year-old singer, who is reportedly worth around 300m, agreed to pay 1.6m in back taxes in 36 monthly instalments.

Investigating Bologna magistrate Alberto Ziroldi will decide whether to put Pavarotti on trial.

He took over the case after prosecutors in Modena asked for it to be shelved.

Long-running conflict

The Italian authorities started investigating the affairs of the singer and other Italian personalities in 1997.

Pavarotti has already been ordered to pay some 3m in back taxes for the period 1989-90 in another case which he is appealing.

Pavarotti has always denied irregularities. Last year he said: "I'm not a tax cheat. I pay my taxes where I sing.

"It's very difficult for a singer to avoid taxes because there's a 33% withholding tax on earnings."

Prosecutors in Bologna are alleging that, despite the singer's claims that he lives in the house he bought in Monte Carlo 1983, he has only entered it on tax returns in 1996.

The prosecutors say that Pavarotti's main residences are in his Italian hometown Modena and a holiday villa at Pesaro on the Adriatic coast.
