Critics name Dance as best actor

Charles Dance has impressed critics and audiences in Shadowlands
Actor Charles Dance has been named best actor in the Critics' Circle Theatre Awards for Shadowlands.

The 61-year-old has won rave reviews for the play, which is based on the life of author CS Lewis.

Former Shameless star Anne-Marie Duff was named best actress for Saint Joan at the National Theatre.

The award for best Shakespearean performance was shared between Patrick Stewart in Macbeth and Chiwetel Ejiofor in Othello.

Macbeth won a second award with Rupert Goold named as best director.

Hairspray was the only other production to scoop two wins. It was named best musical and Leanne Jones was named best newcomer for her role as Tracy Turnblad.
