The critics said: "He's got a totally weird haircut [but] he's about as perfect a representation of unambiguous evil as the movies have lately offered." (Time)

Trivia: Javier Angel Encinas Bardem used to play rugby for the Spanish national team.

CASEY AFFLECK

Casey Affleck
Casey Affleck is the younger brother of Oscar winner Ben Affleck

Nominated for: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

The character: Affleck is the titular Ford, part of outlaw Jesse James' posse who shoots him dead.

Previous Oscar wins: None

He said: "When Jesse James gets killed people have a very strong reaction, so they have to make Ford out to be a two-dimensional villain. But he was obviously a complicated person."

The critics said: "Affleck brilliantly gives life to this oddball weakling born for humiliation yet desperate for significance - the echoes of Lee Harvey Oswald and Mark Chapman must be intentional." (Empire)

Trivia: Affleck has an uncredited role in coarse teen comedy American Pie.

PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN

Nominated for: Charlie Wilson's War

The character: Ferociously intelligent, emotionally volatile CIA agent Gust Avrakotos, who convinces a US congressman to supply arms to Afghanistan.

He said: "Human nature is surprising. People in general are surprising: they're pretty weird, odd and eccentric. I think that if you're doing your job as an actor you try to capture that."

The critics said: Hoffman should not be able to surprise us with his excellence and daring, yet he does." (The Times)

Trivia: He fought to keep his feet on the ground after winning his Oscar for Capote in 2006. "It's pretty hard to be grateful when everyone is telling you that you should want more," he said.

TOM WILKINSON

Tom Wilkinson
Wilkinson will appear in the Tom Cruise film Valkyrie
Age: 59

Nominated for: Michael Clayton

The character: Lawyer Arthur Edens, who suffers a nervous breakdown after realising the pharmaceutical company he's spent decades defending has been poisoning people with their products.

He said: "I remember when we went to the Golden Globes, which is the only one of those big things that I've ever been to, I can remember thinking: 'Christ, there's Madonna!'"

The critics said: "A heartbreaking, scene-stealing performance." (The Onion)

Trivia: Wilkinson turned down a role in the Lord of the Rings trilogy because he did not want to leave his family for the year-long shoot in New Zealand.

HAL HOLBROOK

Holbrook has appeared in TV shows like The Sopranos and West Wing
Age: 83

Nominated for: Into The Wild

The character: Ron Franz, a vulnerable, lonely war veteran who sets up home in the desert after his wife and child are killed in a car accident.

He said: "When I saw the film, I didn't even recognise myself."

The critics said: "A lovely surprise and a quietly moving tour de force." (Wall Street Journal)

Trivia: Holbrook has been performing his one-man show, Mark Twain Tonight!, for more than 50 years.
