Coronation Street cast

One of the top stars from television soap Coronation Street is to star in a new role of her own - as Lady Mayoress of Leeds.

Liz Dawn, who plays Vera Duckworth, said she was "thrilled and honoured" to be invited to partner Lord Mayor Bernard Atha, whose year in office starts next month.

"It's my home city and this means so much to me," said Dawn, 60.

And she added: "I'll have to get some tips from Audrey Roberts about how to be a lady mayoress.

"Audrey's been the Lady Mayoress of Weatherfield and knows plenty about it."

Breast cancer

Dawn will continue with her role in Coronation Street and attend civic functions in her spare time.

Councillor Atha said he had made the invitation to her in recognition of her work for charity.

She has raised more than 500,000 for a breast cancer appeal in her name.

A cleaner and a care worker have also been invited to help in the role of Lady Mayoress.
