Crash director sues over profits

Crash won Paul Haggis an Oscar for best original screenplay

The director and producer of Crash is to sue one of his co-producers on the Oscar-winning film, claiming he is owed $4.7m (£2.3m) in profits.

Paul Haggis has accused Bob Yari of a breach of contract.

He is disputing an agreement signed in 2002 regarding the distribution of profits, which depended on the movie's financial success.

Crash, a film about racial tension in Los Angeles, won three Academy Awards in 2006, including best picture.

Mr Yari is being sued not only by Mr Haggis but also by Bobby Moresco, who co-wrote the film.

However, Mr Yari has argued in court documents that Crash was not a particularly profitable production when various costs were taken into account.

The case is one of a number surrounding the movie, with another co-producer, Cathy Schulman, also beginning legal proceedings against Mr Yari.

Crash - starring Don Cheadle, Thandie Newton and Sandra Bullock - earned nearly $100m (£48.5m) worldwide when it was released two years ago.
