Rhys Meyers arrested in Ireland

The actor was admitted to a rehab clinic earlier this year

Actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers has been charged with public drunkenness and breach of the peace following an incident at Dublin Airport.

The star, recently seen as Henry VIII in BBC Two's The Tudors, was arrested after allegedly being refused entry to a London-bound flight.

The 30-year-old was released on bail and is due to appear before Dublin District Court on 5 December.

Rhys Meyers had been in the city promoting his latest film, August Rush.

The movie, which opens in the UK on Friday, also stars Robin Williams.

In April, Irish-born Meyers was admitted to a Californian rehab clinic but checked out the following month.

Speaking to news agency The Associated Press last year, the actor said he found it hard to socialise in Ireland because of its hard-drinking pub culture.

"I gave up drinking a few years ago, and this is the first time I've spent time in my country trying not to drink," he said.

"I would never drink again. It is hard to avoid. I want my career, and you can't really do that and be successful on the screen.

"I'm young. If I grow older, which I hope I do, there's going to be an awful lot of time to sit in your 60s and 70s and 80s, lots of time for Southern Comfort and ice then," he added.

The actor has starred in several films including Woody Allen's Match Point, Mission Impossible III and Bend It Like Beckham.
