Stereophonics singer Kelly Jones has been treated in hospital after injuring his arm during a fracas with bouncers at a London nightclub.

The 33-year-old Welsh star received a deep gash to his arm at Club Amika, which was hosting the after-show party for the Vodafone Live Music Awards.

Jones admitted there was a scuffle and said he was "thrown onto the streets".

But the club said the band were "drunk" and "rowdy" and Jones was injured when he staggered into a vase, smashing it.

The group performed at the awards event on Wednesday before moving on to the party on Kensington High Street, west London.

"We walked in there you kind of sensed the vibe from the all the bouncers. They wouldn't let people back in the building after having a cigarette," Jones told BBC Radio 1.

He claimed the bouncer "kicked off" after he poked his head round a toilet cubicle door to tell his mates their cab was waiting for them.

"We were far from wasted, we had a TV show to leave for at eight o'clock the next morning," he added.

The injury means Jones will not be able to play guitar for three to four weeks and the band have been forced to cancel a gig in Cambridge.

Jones was treated in casualty for three hours and said the doctors were concerned. "They wanted to get a plastic surgeon because they knew I need my arm," he said.

If the injury had been any closer to a tendon he would have been out of action for at least six months, the singer said.

An Amika statement said: "We have a responsibility to protect our patrons and reserve the right to remove anyone who we feel is acting inappropriately.

"Kelly and his table had been observed by our management as being rowdy and drunk and therefore were being closely monitored by security.

"Kelly was asked to leave Amika after walking into the ladies toilets and being defiant when told by security that he couldn't go in there.

"This resulted in an argument between the two parties and our security subsequently deeming it necessary to ask him to leave the venue due to his aggressive attitude and his failure to comply with requests of security.

"The injury was not directly at the hands of our staff, it was the result of a tussle between Kelly and our security in which Kelly was staggering and knocked into a large vase, which smashed and consequently cut his arm."

The original band members were from the south Wales valleys village of Cwmaman and were the first band to sign to Virgin head Richard Branson's V2 label in 1996.

Their hits have included Have a Nice Day and Dakota, and they are currently promoting new single It Means Nothing.
