Surgery for veteran actress Gabor
Zsa Zsa Gabor in 1986
Zsa Zsa Gabor became one of Hollywood's most glamorous stars
Flamboyant Hungarian-born actress Zsa Zsa Gabor has undergone surgery to treat an infection in her legs.

Gabor was operated on for two hours at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, her husband, Frederic von Anhalt, told Reuters press agency.

Doctors are hopeful the operation would be successful and the infection had not spread to the bone, her husband said.

The star, famed for her many husbands and slapping a police officer has suffered ill health in recent years.

She was in a car accident in 2002, leaving her partially parlysed, and suffered a stroke two years ago.

Gabor, known for calling everyone "darling", had emergency surgery to clear a blocked artery following the stroke.

One of three glamorous sisters who stole the Hollywood limelight in the 1950s and '60s, she is better known for her colourful private life than her acting.

She was jailed for three days in 1989 after slapping a Beverly Hills police officer who stopped her for driving with expired number plates.

Her film career was at its peak in the 1950s, when she appeared in movies including Moulin Rouge and the Orson Welles classic Touch of Evil.

She has one child, daughter Francesca Hilton, who is the great aunt of socialite Paris Hilton.

It's believed Gabor is in her late 80s, though some biographical sources list her age as 90.
