BBC Radio Five Live presenter Jane Garvey is to become a regular host of Radio 4's Woman's Hour programme.

Garvey, who was the station's first voice when it launched in 1994, will replace Martha Kearney, now the host of Radio 4's The World At One.

The co-presenter of Five Live's drivetime show for the past 13 years, Garvey will join Jenni Murray, the main presenter of Woman's Hour.

Garvey said she was "thrilled" to be joining a "part of radio history".

Anniversary

She added that the programme "has a special place in so many people's lives".

Radio 4 controller Mark Damazer said: "Jane has verve and wit and she has demonstrated over many years an ability to deal with a huge array of current affairs topics.

"It's a very good day for Radio 4," he added.

Garvey will make her first appearance on the programme on 8 October.

The programme marked its 60th anniversary in October 2006.
