LA square honours TV's Larry King

King has worked in US broadcasting for over 50 years

US talk show host Larry King has been honoured by Los Angeles city officials, who have named a square after him.

Los Angeles City Council voted to rename a block surrounding a CNN building Larry King Square to mark his 50 years in broadcasting.

King, 73, started his career at Miami radio station WIOD in 1957.

The council also agreed to name a junction I Love Lucy Square, in honour of late comic Lucille Ball and restaurant owner Lucy Casada.

Ball and her husband Desi Arnaz also had a production company at the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Plymouth Boulevard.

King, who was born in New York as Lawrence Harvey Zeiger, got his break on radio as a disc jockey and newsreader, before becoming an interviewer.

He became a national talk show host on radio in 1978, and his Larry King Live show began on CNN in 1985.

His political guests on CNN have included President George Bush, Bill Clinton, George Bush Snr, Mikhail Gorbachev, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair, while his showbusiness interviews have featured Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Elizabeth Taylor, Prince and Bob Hope.
