High School album leads US chart

The soundtrack to Disney's High School Musical 2 has become the first album to stay on top of the US charts for four weeks since 2005.

It sold 165,000 copies in the week up to 9 September, giving it a wide lead over second-placed The Dutchess by Fergie, which sold 49,000 copies.

The soundtrack to the original made-for-TV film was the best-selling album in the US in 2006.

The film makes its UK debut on the Disney Channel on 21 September.

More than 17 million people saw its TV debut in the US last month.

The original High School Musical movie was an unexpected success for Disney, with profits estimated to be in excess of $100m (£50m) from a budget of just $4m (£2m).

Described as a modern-day Grease, it was seen by more than 200 million viewers in 100 countries.

Another Disney act, 14-year-old actress Miley Cyrus, is at number three in the US chart with Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus.

Amy Winehouse's Back to Black returned to the top 10, rising four places to number nine, having sold 29,000 copies last week.
