Jude Law and Kenneth Branagh

Actor Jude Law is to play Shakespeare's Hamlet in London's West End, under the direction of Kenneth Branagh.

Law will play the role in 2009 as part of a one-year Donmar Warehouse season at the nearby Wyndham's Theatre.

Branagh - who will also act in the season in a production of Chekhov's Ivanov - recently directed Law in a remake of Michael Caine's film Sleuth.

Doctor Who actor David Tennant is to star in a separate Royal Shakespeare Company production of Hamlet in 2008.

Patrick Stewart, currently to be seen in the RSC's Macbeth, will play Claudius, under Gregory Doran's direction.

Tennant - whose prevous roles for the RSC include Touchstone in As You Like It and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet - will also play Berowne in Love's Labour's Lost.

Hamlet and Love's Labour's Lost will run at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon between July and November next year.

The Donmar's residency at the Wyndham's will also include a production of Twelfth Night starring Derek Jacobi as Malvolio.

The RSC is staging its own version of the Shakespeare comedy later this year, with American actor Jon Lithgow in the role.

Jude Law was last seen on the London stage playing Doctor Faustus at the Young Vic in 2002.

Branagh has played Hamlet numerous times on stage and starred in a 1996 film version he himself directed.
