US rapper Foxy Brown has been charged with assault after allegedly hitting a neighbour with her mobile phone.

Ms Brown, real name Inga Marchand, got into an argument with Arlene Raymond over the hip-hop star playing her car stereo, New York police said.

Ms Brown was released on bail and charged with two counts of assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

But she is already on probation and could now face jail. Her manager described the charges as false.

Ms Raymond claimed Ms Brown hurled the phone at her a few days after the fight over the stereo, cutting her lip and knocking a tooth loose.

Jail warning

The troubled star is currently on probation after pleading guilty to an assault at a beauty salon in 2004.

That dispute was over the payment of a manicure.

Earlier this year, Ms Brown was accused of violating probation in an incident at a Florida hair salon, when police said she threw hair glue at an employee.

She was threatened with jail but was kept on probation after a Manhattan judge said she had kept appointments with her probation officer, passed drug tests and attended anger management classes.

But she was told she would face a jail sentence if she broke her restrictions again.
