US country singer Mindy McCready has been taken into custody at Nashville International Airport over claims that she violated her probation.

McCready, best known for Guys Do It All the Time, was charged with battery and resisting arrest in Florida on Sunday.

The 31-year-old singer was on probation at the time for fraudulently obtaining prescription painkillers in 2004.

Deputy District Attorney General Derek Smith said new charges and failure to report them broke terms of probation.

Troubled past

The 2004 conviction was the first of a series of run-ins with the law for the singer in recent years.

While still on probation, McCready was charged with driving under the influence in May 2005. She was acquitted of the latter charge, but found guilty of driving on a suspended licence.

The incident was one of two parole violations that led to an arrest warrant being issued for the singer in August 2005.

She was subsequently arrested and held for 10 days before being released on bail.

At a court appearance the following month, Ms McCready revealed she had attempted to commit suicide after finding out she was pregnant.

The star has not released an album since 2002's Mindy McCready, which sold poorly and led to the end of her contract with Capitol Records.
