Titanic star's baby joy

Actress Kate Winslet, star of the Hollywood blockbuster Titanic, is expecting her first baby.

The 24-year-old and her director husband Jim Threapleton, 26, will become parents later this year, it was announced in Los Angeles.

A spokesman for the actress said: "I can confirm Kate Winslet is pregnant.

"At this point we know nothing else except that she and Jim are absolutely thrilled."

'Young mum'

The actress, nominated twice for Oscars for her roles in Titanic and Sense and Sensibility, has said that she wanted to be a "young mum".

In a recent interview she said that she considers a happy - and large - family more important than stardom or professional success.

"I adore babies and children and Jim and I want three or four," she said.

"And I want to be a young mum so that my experience of being a child and a teenager is still fresh."

The couple met when Winslet was filming Hideous Kinky in Morocco in 1997.

Love at first sight

Threapleton was third assistant director and the pair said it was love at first sight.

Their relationship grew when Threapleton comforted her when her first love, former EastEnders producer Stephen Tredre, died from cancer.

They were secretly engaged before returning to England and got married in a low-key ceremony in her home town of Reading, Berkshire, in November 1998.

Winslet has just finished shooting Quills - about the life of the Marquis de Sade - and is expected to star in an adaptation of Robert Harris's bestselling book, Enigma.
