EastEnder Reid takes more time off

Mike Reid originally took time off due to overwork

EastEnders actor Mike Reid has been written out of the hit BBC One soap for a further four weeks, amid continuing concerns for his health.

The 60-year-old star, who plays Frank Butcher, had been due to return to work after taking a fortnight off to recover from severe exhaustion.

Top team: Barbara Windsor (Peggy) and Mike Reid (Frank)
But an EastEnders spokeswoman said that Reid, thought to be visiting relatives in Manchester, will now be away from Albert Square for longer.

"We've written Mike out for another four weeks, just to be on the safe side" she said.

"But we are keeping the situation under review so, if he feels better and wants to return to work sooner, he can do," she added.

The actor, who has been a regular face on the show since 1988, is the on-screen husband of Queen Vic landlady Peggy, played by Barbara Windsor.

As well as his EastEnders commitment, Reid still juggles a career as a stand-up comic.

He has also been filming scenes for Snatch, director Guy Ritchie's follow-up to Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which also stars Brad Pitt, Vinnie Jones and Ewen Bremner.
