Comedian and actor Ricky Gervais is to play a leading role in a Hollywood romantic comedy, according to a report.
Gervais has already made a name for himself in the US
Gervais, best known for the hit UK sitcoms The Office and Extras, is due to start filming Ghost Town in October, says the Hollywood Reporter.
The actor has had supporting roles in films including Night at the Museum.
Jurassic Park and Spider-Man writer David Koepp is to direct the film, about a man able to see dead people, which will also star Greg Kinnear.
Gervais's breakthrough series, The Office, won Bafta and Golden Globe awards and has been remade in the US and France.
His follow-up, Extras, won two prizes at the Rose d'Or television festival and has attracted stars of the calibre of Robert De Niro and Samuel L Jackson in cameo roles.
Gervais has also written and appeared in an episode of The Simpsons, and performed stand-up tours and record-breaking podcasts.
Other minor film roles have been in For Your Consideration and Stardust, the forthcoming movie from Layer Cake director Matthew Vaughn.
