Womad confirms Staton soul show

Womad is known for its flag displays

Soul singer Candi Staton is among the diverse artists confirmed to play at this summer's Womad festival.

The 66-year-old singer started her career in gospel but is now best knows for disco hit Young Hearts Run Free.

The world music festival, in its 25th year, has moved from its long-term home in Reading to a larger venue at Charlton Park in Wiltshire.

Baaba Maal and drummer Bill Cobham are among those who will play at the event, which runs from 27-29 July.

Seven stages

Other groups will come from as far afield as Mali, Senegal and Tibet.

The move to Charlton Park came after concerns the Rivermead site, first used in 1990, was too small to host the event.

Despite having a larger venue, there are no plans to expand the current 20,000 a day capacity.

The festival, set up by Peter Gabriel, will feature seven stages and workshop areas will boast more than 70 artists from 40 countries.
