Six new writers who published chapters of their books online are to make it into print as winners of YouWriteOn website's book of the year awards.
The Arts Council website named Briton Guy Saville's historical thriller The Africa Reich its main prize winner.
Fellow British writer HJ Windsor won the children's book of the year award for Charlie Squires Goes Elsewhere.
Two runners-up in each category will also be published. YouWriteOn launched in January 2006 to help new writers.
US writer Patricia J DeLois placed second in the adult category, with Bufflehead Sisters, and fellow American Michael Alan's The Lorelei Effect was third.
The runners-up in the children book category were both British writers, second-placed Sharpshooter by S Star, and Bob Burke's The Third Pig Detective Agency.
Writers review and rate each others' opening chapters on YouWriteOn, with the top-rated work receiving professional advice.
The site attracts up to 10 million page hits a month.
