Rapper Jay-Z charged
Grammy-winning rapper Jay-Z will have to answer two assault charges for allegedly stabbing a record executive during a nightclub brawl. The 29-year-old star, whose real name is Shawn Carter, was freed on $50,000 (£30,000) bail by a Manhattan judge on Monday.
He is charged with first-degree attempted assault and second-degree assault and could face up to 22 years in prison if found guilty. Carter is due to appear before New York's Supreme Court on 22 February. Outside court, Carter's lawyer, Murray Richman said he was "very disappointed" with the decision. Party stabbing Carter is accused of attacking Lance "Un" Rivera at New York City's Kit Kat Klub on 1 December. The assault occurred at the release party for Amplified, the new solo album from A Tribe Called Quest rapper Q-Tip. Police said Untertainment Records head Rivera, a former partner of the late Notorious BIG, was stabbed in the stomach and back, and had a bottle cracked over his head. He spent the night in hospital, but was released the next day. Another man was injured, but didn't require treatment. Jay-Z's record label, Def Jam, released a statement at the time denying Jay-Z's involvement with the stabbing. Grammy winner Brooklyn-born Jay-Z became one of hip-hop's top-selling artists in 1998 when his album Vol. 2 ... Hard Knock Life which spent five consecutive weeks at number one in the US charts. The record went on to win him a Grammy award that year. His hit single from the album, entitled Hard Knock Life, which samples an Annie song, was a big club and chart hit in the UK. The rapper's latest album, Vol. 3...Life And Times Of S Carter, has sold more than 750,000 copies since its release on 28 December. Jay-Z's Hard Knock Life tour movie is due for US release at the end of March. |
