Love Parade hits the UK

Glamming it up for the Love Parade in 1999

One of Europe's biggest music festivals, Berlin's Love Parade, is set to take over the centre of Leeds in July.

Last year more than a million glamorously-dressed party-goers crammed into the centre of the German capital for a celebration of dance music.

Now a parallel parade is being planned for Leeds on the same day as this year's parade, Saturday 8 July.

Founded in 1989, the Berlin parade attracts more than a million people
It will feature a float parade, a live link to the Berlin event, and an open-air dance party outside Leeds City Hall, organised by BBC Radio 1.

German DJ Dr Motte, one of the organisers of the Berlin parade, said: "Our language is the music through which we express our joy.

"Music knows no boundaries and builds bridges between all cultures and peoples."

Organisers hope 100,000 revellers will attend the event. DJs set to appear include Carl Cox, Judge Jules, Norman Cook and Pete Tong, and clubs contributing floats include Cream, Gatecrasher, Home, Manumission, Ministry of Sound and Slinky.

Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt said: "Love Parade UK has gathered momentum at an amazing pace.

"It seems everybody in the dance community is working together to make this free event a success."
