US actress Adrienne Shelly, best known for her roles in the Hal Hartley films The Unbelievable Truth and Trust, has been found dead in her New York office.

The 40-year-old was discovered by her husband Andy Ostroy on Wednesday night, according to her agent Rachel Sheedy.

An autopsy was carried out on Thursday, but the medical examiner did not have a cause of death, Ms Sheedy added.

Shelly, whose real name was Adrienne Levine, was about to release a film, Waitress, which she wrote and directed.

"She was so psyched about the film," Ms Sheedy said. "She gathered an amazing cast, and she was really happy and excited."

Shelly's most recent acting appearance was alongside Matt Dillon in the 2005 movie Factotum.

Her agent said no memorial service had been scheduled as yet, and she was still informing acquaintances about Shelly's death.

She described Shelly as a warm and giving friend.

"She was incredibly creative and a tremendously prolific writer and - I don't know - she was the girl you'd go to if you were sad."

Shelly is survived by her husband and three-year-old daughter, Sophie.
