Conductor Silvio Varviso dies, 82
Renowned conductor Silvio Varviso has died in hospital in Belgium after a brief illness, at the age of 82.

The Swiss-born conductor performed his last opera, Puccini's Tosca, in September at Antwerp's Vlaamse Opera.

After studying piano, violin, clarinet, trumpet and percussion, Varviso made his conducting debut at the age of 20.

Throughout his career, the versatile conductor led performances with many major orchestras at the world's most prestigious opera houses.
