Actress Gabrielle swaps soaps

Sister act: Actresses Denise Welch and Gabrielle Glaister

Former Brookside actress Gabrielle Glaister has been recruited by Coronation Street bosses in a bid to spice up the social life of Rovers Return landlady Natalie Barnes.

Glaister, who made her debut as long-suffering Patricia Farnham on the Channel 4 soap in 1990, will debut as Natalie's younger sister Debs Brownlow.

Natalie, played by Denise Welch, has been slowly getting her life back together after her husband, Des, was murdered by a drugs gang just weeks after their wedding.

She recently embarked on a new romance with barman Vinny, played by James Gaddas.

She will put her painful past behind her when Debs arrives on 6 February - fresh from a job as a hairdresser on board a cruise liner and looking to have a good time.

Glaister said: "I am a huge fan of Coronation Street and I am thrilled to be working alongside Denise. I'm just hoping it won't spoil my enjoyment as a viewer as I will know what is going to happen."

Debs moves into Natalie and Des's old house before moving in on the single men in Weatherfield as well as taking a job at Audrey's salon.

Welch added: "It will be great to see Natalie's sister in Coronation Street, the two are obviously close and out to have fun and it will be an opportunity to establish another part of Natalie's character."

Glaister played career woman Patricia, who was married to two-timing Max Farnham. Her character eventually moved to France with their children.

Since leaving Brookside Close, she has appeared in The Heart Surgeon, with John Thaw, and has just completed a theatre tour of Shangalang as well as appearing in Elton John's Glasses in the West End.
