Awards joy for Santana

Carlos Santana A triumphant Carlos Santana receives his award

Veteran musician Carlos Santana shared the limelight with younger stars Britney Spears, Lauryn Hill and Shania Twain at the American Music Awards on Monday night.

The 52-year-old, whose career is making a dramatic comeback in the US, won best album in the awards, voted for by a poll of US music buyers.

Santana received a standing ovation at the Los Angeles ceremony when it was announced that his album, Supernatural, had won the prize.

Meanwhile, country star Shania Twain was named as the only artist to receive two personal awards, taking the favourite female artist title in both the pop and country categories.

Hip-hop star Lauryn Hill was only a short distance behind, winning for favourite soul act and for her album, the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Teenager Britney Spears won best pop/rock new artist, but lost out in the best album category to Santana.

Santana's album, Supernatural, features contributions from current US acts such as Hill and folk-rock star Dave Mathews.

He paid tribute to his co-producer, Clive Davis, saying: "A lot of people told me they didn't want to work with me because I'm old. Mr Davis believed in me. We both believed we had a masterpiece in our belly."

Mariah Carey Mariah lends her voice to the event
Santana could be set for greater glory yet - he is nominated for 10 awards at next month's Grammy ceremony.

Former Genesis frontman Phil Collins was the only British representative, winning the favourite adult contemporary artist title.

Other top acts included Will Smith, voted best male pop-rock artist, and Garth Brooks, named favourite country artist. He also won best country album, and a special "artist of the 90s" prize.

Favourite group were the Backstreet Boys, with Ricky Martin gaining an award as favourite Latin music star.

Mariah Carey was also presented with a lifetime achievement award for "rare and distinguished accomplishments".

Performers appearing on the show - televised across the US - included Beck, Jennifer Lopez and the Eurythmics. Spice Girls singer Mel C was among celebrities presenting prizes at the event at the Shrine Auditorium.

Shania Twain: Twin win
But little was seen of two favourites for awards. Shania Twain and Whitney Houston stayed away, observing a convention that acts who want to be invited to appear at next month's Grammys do not appear on the AMA show.

Organisers denied Whitney Houston's absence was related to an incident in Hawaii last week when marijuana was reportedly found in her bag at an airport. She was nominated for three awards, but won none.

In contrast to the venerable Grammys, the American Music Awards is presented as a people's award show. The winners are voted for by a poll of 20,000 US music buyers, with the 20 categories decided by sales figures and radio airplay.
