Rapper Brown threatened with jail
Foxy Brown
Foxy Brown says she is innocent of the charges
US rapper Foxy Brown has been threatened with jail after failing to turn up to a court hearing in New York.

Brown, 27, who is accused of assault, wrote a letter to judge Melissa Jackson saying she was unable to attend as she was undergoing mouth surgery.

In August the Hip Hop artist pleaded guilty to the charge. She has since attempted to withdraw her plea.

The judge has said she is now considering sentencing the star to time in prison instead of probation.

Plea deal

Brown - real name Inga Marchand - rejected an earlier plea deal last year, demanding the assault charges be reduced to the lesser count of disorderly conduct.

At the time her lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, said she would not agree to any resolution that involved her admitting to a crime.

If the star had agreed to the plea deal she would have been given 10 days community service. However the rap artist is now facing a year in jail if found guilty of assault.

The rapper was accused of punching and kicking two employees from a New York salon in August 2004 during a dispute over payment for a pedicure and a manicure.

She claims she only got the pedicure, but didn't receive the manicure.

The rap star's lawyer Joseph Tacopina said she did not hit the alleged victims but an altercation did take place.
