Sarah Waters has been the long-term favourite
A bookmaker has reported a last minute flurry of bets on the outcome of the Man Booker Prize.

Six authors have been shortlisted for the award but Ladbrokes have claimed a surge in people backing Kiran Desai, with her book The Inheritance of Loss.

Despite this Sarah Waters remains the 5/4 favourite to land the 50,000 prize with The Night Watch.

The result will be announced at a ceremony at the Guildhall in London on Tuesday evening.

Ladbrokes spokesman, Nick Weinberg, said: "Punters, who are aware that the judges have sprung a surprise or two in the past, have sensed a bit of value amongst the also rans in the betting.

"As a result Desai has built up a head of steam. The gamble has taken shape over the weekend and has become a self fulfilling prophecy."

Of this year's shortlisted authors, only Sarah Waters has been nominated before.

Last year's prize was won by John Banville for The Sea, beating the favourite Julian Barnes.
